Hacía mucho frío.
It was very cold.
En el portal de Belén, María descansaba junto a su hijo recién nacido.
In the Bethlehem stable, Mary was resting next to her new-born Son.
Había un pequeño fuego encendido en el portal pero se apagaba.
There was a small fire alight in the stable but it kept going out.
El niñito comenzaba a tener frío.
The baby started to feel cold.
José fue en busca de más leña para avivar las llamas.
Joseph went in search of more firewood to kindle the flames.
María empezó a pedir ayuda.
Mary began to ask for help.
Primero le preguntó al buey pero el animal estaba dormido y no se despertó.
First she asked the ox but the animal was asleep and did not waken up.
Entonces pidió ayuda al burro, pero estaba agotado del viaje muy largo que habían hecho hasta Belén.
Next she asked the donkey for help but he was exhausted from the very long journey that they had made to Bethlehem.
Pidió ayuda al gallo, pero cantaba y por eso no la escuchó.
She asked the cockerel for help but he was crowing and did not listen to her.

Cock-a-doodle-doo!
María estaba desesperada, pero de repente oyó el trinar de un pajarito.
Mary was desperate but suddenly she heard the trill of a little bird.
Dijo - ¡Pajarito! ¿Podrías ayudarme? Mi hijo tiene mucho frío.
She said, "Little bird! Could you help me? My Son is very cold."
El pajarito se fue volando hasta su nido. Comenzó a arrancar los palitos de su nido y se los llevó a María para el fuego.
The little bird went flying to his nest. He began to pull out the twigs from his nest and carried them to Mary for the fire.
El pajarito se dio cuenta de que los palitos tardaban en arder. Justo por eso comenzó a aletear las alas con fuerza para avivar las llamas.
The little bird realised that the twigs were taking a long time to burn. For this reason, he began to flap his wings vigorously in order to kindle the flames.
El fuego entonces fue tan intenso que el pecho del pájaro se quemó. Aún así, siguió aleteando.
The fire was then so intense that the bird's breast was burnt. Nevertheless, he carried on flapping his wings.
María decidió llamarle ‘petirrojo’, que significa ‘pecho rojo’.
Mary decided to call him 'petirrojo' which means 'red breast'.
A partir de ese día todos los descendientes del pajarito tuvieron el pecho rojo. Nos recuerdan el gesto generoso del pajarito en el portal de Belén.
From that day onwards, all the descendants of the little bird had a red breast. They remind us of the little bird's generous gesture in the Bethlehem stable.
¡Muchas gracias, petirrojo! Eres un pajarito muy generoso, fuerte y humilde.
Thank you very much, robin red breast! You are a very generous, strong and humble little bird.
