A List of Important Operatic Italian Words


 

Aria  -  This is the word for an individual song in an opera.

Soprano -  This is the name of a female opera singer who can sing the very high notes.  She is usually the most important lady in an opera.

Mezzo soprano - This is the name of a female opera singer with a lower voice than a soprano.  Her voice does not reach the highest notes.

Tenore - This is the name of a male opera singer who can reach the higher notes.  He is usually the most important man in an opera.
 

Baritono - This is the name of a male opera singer who has a lower sound to his voice.  He doesn't reach the same high notes as a tenor. 

Coro - A group of people singing in a chorus.

Intermezzo - A piece of music somewhere in the middle of the opera.  It is a kind of musical interval.

Preludio - A piece of music at the beginning of the opera.  It often gives you an idea of the kind of music that you will be hearing later in the opera.
